Description

Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum ‘Black Beauty’, also known as Elephant Ear, this brilliant tropical has dark purple-black leaves with a bright green dot in center of the leaf. Great for use in mixed planters or in the landscape. Can also be brought indoors during winter months and grown as a houseplant. Tolerant of heat and wet conditions.

The Black Beauty is a compact elephant ear that grows 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. It has puckered, dark purple leaves and thick black stems. If your plant doesn’t look just like the picture, give it a little time to grow up. Elephant ears’ attributes become even more defined when they mature.

The more sun it receives, the darker black the plant becomes, but remember it loves water. This elephant ear reproduces readily, so I’m not sure why everybody is calling it “rare.”

THIS IS NOT A HOUSEPLANT. It will be weak and green indoors. We grow in a shaded greenhouse to keep them from being too large to ship. The pictures with black foliage are the plants in spring in full sun. The video shows what they look like in the shade after one week. They’ve lost the deep color. Your plant will get color when it gets ample sun, but remember to acclimate it to the sun before putting in full sun.
